Some folks seem to be mistaking reports of Keith's absence for indications that he drops out entirely from the mix. While he may have literally nodded off here and there during the later period, what mostly comes through in '78-'79 is his lack of inventiveness. This is particularly glaring when you compare with his playing during the '72-74 years, when his playing was so strong and creative you can actually hear the band rearranging their sound around him over the course of that period.

In the later years he was reduced to pounding out unvaried block chords, and occasionally mimicking Jerry's motifs. I agree that his decline was not actually responsible for he and Donna's leaving the band; as so many have pointed out, the Dead were pathologically predisposed to avoid making serious decisions.

That said, I think Keith in his prime was the best keyboardist they had.
